Silver Class Assembly

Welcome

Silver class treated the rest of the junior school to the most amazing assembly this week. We have been working incredibly hard to put on our assembly, showing the rest of the school the work we have been producing based around the Walk in the Jungle book. The highlight of the assembly was a parade of the different animals. Each child was given a particular character, and we helped to choose the costumes to best match the descriptions. Silver class also had some beautiful singing to help finish their fantastic assembly.

Orange Class Brown Bear

Orange class

Orange class have been busy this week reading the Brown Bear story. We have been following the story, as the main character is asked: Brown Bear – what do you see? A series of different animals appear in front of Brown Bear. We have been helping Brown Bear to identify these. Using colour as the main tool for recognition, Orange class have greatly enjoyed being able to decide which animal Brown Bear is looking at.

Purple Class Funny Bones

Purple class

The children in Purple class are coming towards the end of their work based around the brilliant Funny Bones book. We have been learning all term about different bone shapes, and how the skeletons in the book can move and dance. We will be starting a new class book in January, and we are all very much looking forward to reading Rumble in the Jungle. Our word work has also started to include letter recognition. Purple class have been working with the velcro letters, and using these to help spell out their names.

Red Class Swimming

Red Class

Red class have now completed their autumn term of weekly swimming lessons. Our trips to Crystal Palace are proving to be beneficial to the children on many different levels. As well as the fitness we are able to gain from swimming, it is also a wonderful opportunity to gain confidence in the water. Red class have also enjoyed being out in the local community, and getting to use such a wonderful leisure resource.

Green Class Animals

Green class

We have been using animals in Green class to help the children identify and match the colours and names of different animals. We have learnt that a frog is green, and that a fish can be gold or yellow. This system of matching is a really great way for the children to associate the appearance of an animal with a specific name. Green class have also been busy creating a set of Christmas cards that will be sent to staff throughout Turney School. We posed for a special photograph, and then used these images within our cards. Happy Christmas!

Blue Class Snowmen!

Blue class has been decorated for Christmas with some brilliant bouncy snowmen! The children have been following a set of instructions to create their own decorations. We have been concentrating on our cutting and coordination skills, and putting all the different body parts in the correct sequence order for our snowmen. The children then decided what emotion they would like their snowman to display. When finished, the bouncy snowmen will be taken home by the Blue class children to show and display amongst family and friends.

Yellow Class Food Choices

We help and encourage all pupils at Turney School to use the Communication in Print system to enable us to express our thoughts and feelings. Yellow class have been making their own food choices, using CIP as an aid to communicating their requests. Our morning snack sessions have been set up with CIP as one of the options to help us communicate our needs.

By using simple diagrams, the pupils are able to improve their sentence structure. On the menu this week around Yellow class has been apples, oranges, pears, bananas and toast – tasty! You can watch a short video above, with the pupils from Yellow class making their morning snack choices.

Class 7 Basketball Video

Class 7 have been playing a number of competitive ball games during their weekly PE sessions. All of the pupils are extremely confident with ball control, using both their feet and their hands. Playing under the basic rules of basketball, we have introduced them to the idea of working as a team, finding some free space on the court and passing the ball to teammates.

Class 7 are also studying the rules of various games, and using these to help them raise their skill levels further. We have learnt that we can only move with the basketball if we are bouncing it. We have also been learning about the importance of keeping the ball in play, and which team gets to throw the ball back into the game, once it has left the court. You can watch a short video of three of our budding basketball stars above.

Class 9 Humanities

Class 9

As part of our humanities work, Class 9 have been researching and learning all about the American Civil Rights movement. We have produced a timeline showing the main events, right from the early days of slavery, leading up to the inauguration of President Obama, the first black US Head of State. Our pupils have watched a film, which helped to explain how important non-violent protest was in helping the Civil Rights movement.

Class 10 Artwork

Class 10

Class 10 returned from our fantastic trip to the Horniman Museum, inspired by the many splendid masks that we were able to see. As part of our GCSE entry level in Art and Design, we have been using the knowledge and ideas from the Horniman trip to help produce our own Class 10 masks. We started off working with 2D designs. The pupils experimented to see how only two tones of colour could produce an effective image.

We then extended this work to work in a 3D dimension. Using everyday materials that we usually throw out at home, the pupils produced some amazing re-cycled facemasks! Our final component in this topic was to create a series of clay masks. These have now been painted, and are ready for the final stage of firing these up to give a hardened, glazy look. We are proud to present a series of images, showcasing our brilliant Class 10 masks in the photo gallery below.

Class 11 Design Video

Some truly amazing design work has been produced by our incredibly talented Class 11 pupils. We have been studying the design of different buildings all term, observing how the surface texture can change, depending on what material is used. Each pupil has designed and created their own structure. We thought first about what we wanted to build, and for what purpose each building may be used for. Class 11 then decided on a suitable building material. Our work is nearing completion, as we start to paint on the windows on to our designs. A couple of our Class 11 architects talk about their wonderful work in the video above.

Class 12 Community Video

We treated our Class 12 pupils to a pre-Christmas treat of lunch out in the local community this week. All of our young adults (and staff!) had a really great afternoon out at The Ritzy Cinema Cafe in Brixton. We have been working all term on researching and planning trips into our community. The pupils have produced a local map of the area, highlighting various points of interest, or great places to visit. The Ritzy was one of these landmarks, and so it only seemed fair to make the short trip for lunch!

We observed during the short journey some of the other places of interest on our map. We went past Brockwell Park, and then pointed out where the Lido can be found.

When we arrived at The Ritzy, we were greeted by the staff, and shown to our table. Our pupils then looked at the menu available, and made their food and drink choices. Pizza seemed to be the popular option, and we all thought about what particular type of pizza taste we enjoy. Ham and cheese were favourites, and there was even the option for a pizza with a poached egg on top!

With everyone well fed and full of friendly conversation, there was only one task remaining before we departed back to Turney – paying the bill! We had also been keeping an eye on the prices during our afternoon out, and trying hard to keep a track of the budget.

It was wonderful for Class 12 to be out and about in the local community. We greatly enjoyed the company of The Ritzy staff who made us feel most welcome. You can watch a short film of the Class 12 afternoon out above, as well as looking at our lunchtime treat picture gallery below.

Shepherd Little Sensation!

Little Shepherd

We would like to thank all family and friends of Turney School for supporting the children during our recent Christmas concert. The performance of Shepherd Little was a great success. After weeks of preparation, all staff were so proud to see the children perform so wonderfully on the night.

Many thanks to Louie, who has been the main Musical Director for the project. We have used our weekly singing session to not only learn the various parts in the play, but also to find out more about the traditional Nativity story.

You can view a series of images from the grand performance in the picture gallery below. Thank you once again, and we wish all family and friends of Turney School a peaceful and happy break. We look forward to working with the pupils once again when the school re-opens on Tuesday 5th January, 2010.

Red Class Singing Podcast

Red class

The children in Red class are extremely excited about performing a selection of songs at the Turney School Christmas Concert. We have been putting in plenty of practise, to make sure that we can help to sign out some of the songs and actions needed. The concert itself takes place on 11th December, with performances at 2pm and 6pm. Please come along to support the children and the school! If you can’t wait until the big day, you can listen to a short recording of one of our rehearsals in the podcast below.

Green Class Animal Art

Green class

Green class have continued their work researching and learning about different animals this week. We have been looking in particular at the Brown Bear story, and thinking about where bears might live. Green Class currently has an amazing animal display on the wall. We are adding new animal models that we have made each week. We currently have a selection of snakes crawling around in our Green class jungle!

Yellow Class Literacy Video

We have been working incredibly hard on our literacy work in Yellow class this week. The children have been creating their own work around In the Pool, our current class reading book. We have been describing some of the sights that we may see in a pool, and then writing these sentences in our own words. Our Yellow class ideas included a beach ball, a dolphin and a whale! The children then cut out a selection of pictures that we might find in the pool. We labelled these, and then wrote our own stories underneath. You can watch one of our Yellow class pupils proudly reading out their work in the video above.
