Silver Class Singing Podcast

Silver class

Silver class staged a singing assembly with a difference this week – we sang a selection of songs that become faster and faster! The trick here is to listen to the words and follow the actions whilst the song starts off slowly. It gets very tricky to keep up as the songs become faster! Silver class were extremely grateful for the help we received from one of our older friends from Red class who came to help us out.

We also awarded Ryan with the star award, in recognition of how quick he was able to get changed after our earlier swimming session at Brixton Rec! Silver class concluded their weekly singing assembly by learning a new song – Big Bad Wolf. We had many new actions and signs to learn as well!

Orange Class Assembly

Orange class

Orange class received great praise from the rest of the primary school this week after their stunning class assembly. Our presentation to the rest of the school was based around the current Orange class reading book, the Dancing Hen. The children acted out the story, taking on the role of the different characters in the book. The children wore a selection of masks during the assembly that we have been making during our art lessons.

Purple Class Reading

Purple Class

Purple class have been having great fun with their current class reading book, Dear Zoo. We have been using the colourful book to recognise different animals, as well as to think of the sounds that each animal makes. We have used our reading time to take it in turns to open up the interactive reading book, and then find out which animal is waiting for us. Purple Class have been keeping with the animal theme during our singing sessions. Each class member had the chance to choose his or her favourite animal using Communication in Print. We then sang a song about the animal, and acted out the movements made.

Red Class Art

Red class

Red class have been incredibly creative this week, producing a number of brilliant art displays. As part of the preparation for our school assembly, the children have produced some beautiful butterfly pictures. We have been seeing how the wing patterns on a butterfly are symmetrical. We used this technique in our paintings, folding over the picture to create a mirror image of one of the wings.

Red class have also produced a class display based around our current reading book, No Room for Pooh Bear. The story tells how Pooh Bear stores everything in his pouch – our artwork reflects this too! Finally, red class have also made a selection of puppets to accompany our work on the Brown Bear book. We have been using these to act out the story.

Green Class Phonics

Green class

Phonics have been the main focus during literacy lessons in Green class this week. Using the starting point of SAT, we have been exploring new sounds and words, by sounding out the basic letters that we can hear. The children have been thinking about which words or sounds may sound like SAT, and then using this to help with their spellings.

Following on from our maths work looking and recognising different shapes, Green class have been making some shape men during art lessons! We have been thinking about which parts of the body resemble certain shapes, and then using these to make up our characters.

Yellow Class Literacy Video

Yellow class have been working incredibly hard during literacy lessons on improving their range of sentence structure. We have been learning how to describe where different objects are – either inside, outside, in front or at the back. Using these categories, we have then built up a complete sentence to describe what is happening in a series of images.

Some of the children have been taking this approach a stage further, by brainstorming ideas based on what they can see in a picture. This started out as a simple exercise of looking at a picture of a rabbit, holding a carrot. We then thought about how we can arrange our words to help construct a perfect sentence. You can watch an example of the Yellow class literacy work in action above.

Gold Class Assembly

Gold class

Gold class have been preparing for their school assembly that they are staging next week. Our presentation to the rest of the school will be themed around our research into the continent of Africa. Our pupils will proudly display a selection of the beautiful African style masks that they have been making. We will be talking about the findings from our research, looking at the geography and wildlife found within the continent. All of Gold class are looking forward to the grand finale, when we will be singing a traditional African spiritual song. Good luck, Gold class!

Class 7 Happy Wesak!

Class 7

We have been celebrating Happy Wesak Day in Class 7, as part of our humanities work. This is an important religious festival for Buddhists. The Year 7 pupils have been planning and preparing a display, that will proudly go on display in a school corridor. We have been drawing, colouring and cutting very carefully various items that are associated with the Wesak festival. These include hands, beads and lotus flowers.

Class 7 Drama Video

Our drama work in Class 7 has involved using different props to help get into character. The pupils have been using a selection of hats to try and establish a character. We started off by describing the hats, thinking about if they were hard or soft, and what type of material they are made out of. The pupils were then able to try and think which type of job you might be doing if you were to wear a particular hat.

We finished off our drama session in Class 7 by playing a guessing game with the character cards. Each pupil is given a random card, showing an animal, an object or a particular job. By asking a series of questions to our class friends, we then have to try and work out what the card said, without actually seeing it. You can watch a video of the game taking place above.

Class 8 Science Podcast

Class 8

Part of our science topic in Class 8 for this term has been to learn about how different sounds are made. The pupils have been looking at instruments that you pluck, blow, bang or shake. We worked off a list of various instruments that you can find in a traditional orchestra. Our task was to sort these into the four groups, based on how the sound is made. We then described in our own words what type of sound each instrument makes. Our pupils then chose their own favourite orchestra instrument, and researched a little more about these using the internet. You can listen to one of our Class 8 pupils talking about her work in the podcast below.

Class 10 Science

Class 10

Class 10 have been preparing for their entry level GCSE in Science. One of the main topics that we have been learning about this week is how to keep food hot.

You can put food in a cardboard or polystyrene container,” one class member told us. “These help by keeping the cold air out, and they trap the warm air bubbles inside.”

The pupils have also been looking at the benefits of using solar power to heat a house. We have been researching how this is a clean form of power to use, and how solar panels are used to trap the heat from the sun.

Class 11 Art Video

After two terms of intense artwork, it is almost time for our incredibly gifted Class 11 pupils to submit their coursework for their GCSE in art. We are incredibly proud of not only the exceptional high standard of work that has been produced at Turney, but also the maturity and dedication that our pupils have displayed with their work. Each class member now has his or her very own portfolio. The artwork contained within is themed around various subject matter, depending on the syllabus requirements and our own personal choice. One of our fine young artists from Class 11 talks us through his portfolio in the video above.

Class 12 Brixton Market Trip

Class 12 have been continuing to explore our local community around us. This is a fantastic opportunity to take our young adults into their local environment to see the facilities that are nearby. It also helps with independence, as we become more confident in dealing with other people in the community.

This week, Class 12 planned a trip to Brixton Market using public transport. We needed to research first which bus and which train we needed to catch, as well as what times these departed, and how much money we would need for the journey.

When we arrived at West Dulwich station, Class 12 then found out which platform the train to Brixton was departing from. We waited for the train, and tried to pick up as much information as we could, using the many signs at the station.

Once we reached Brixton Market, the real exploration began! Each pupil had been given £1, as well as the instruction to buy an exotic piece of fruit. We wanted as many splendid fruits from around the world that we could find, to make a fruit salad to share once we were back at Turney School.

We found the Brixton Markets traders very friendly and helpful towards us, as well as giving some useful cooking tips. With the shopping complete, we headed back to Turney, and made plans to prepare our fruit salad. You can watch a video of our afternoon out above.

This is a part of the week that is put aside to help our physical development, as well as our sense of our surroundings. As well as swimming sessions, silver class have also benefited greatly from the wonderful soft play area at Brixton Rec.

Orange Class Singing

Orange class

Orange class have been continuing to learn new songs during our weekly singing assembly. This is always a highlight of the week for the children. It is an opportunity to mix with children from other classes, and we also get to improve our signing with the use of the Communication in Print system. We focussed this week on understanding how to sign different colours. The perfect song for this was I Can See a Rainbow! You can listen to our Orange class singers in action in the podcast below.

Purple Class Assembly

Purple Class

We are pleased to report that Purple class’ assembly was a roaring success! The animal themed assembly was based on our current class reading book of Rumble in the Jungle. Each child took on the role of a different character, complete with costume and hand signals. The other children in the primary school greatly enjoyed our acting! We are now focussing on our maths work in Purple class. We have been using numbers that are made from different textures to help the children with their counting abilities. Using their sense of touch, the children are then able to understand how a basic number line works, and to put the numbers in sequence.

Red Class PE Video

Red class had a brilliant PE session using the school trampoline this week. Our aim was to listen to instructions, add in some new movements and of course have some fun! The children practised jumping, turning and using their arms for extra balance. This is a great activity to help improve our coordination, as well as a useful listening skill. Red class were able to carry out the instructions on the trampoline, as you can see in the video above. We all left our PE session feeling incredibly happy, with big smiles all round in Red class!
