Moving On in Silver Class

Silver Class

Silver Class have been preparing for the next stage of their education, as the children plan to start Key Stage 1 in September. This has been a highly successful school year for Silver Class and we believe that all of the children are almost ready for the next stage in their education. To help us with this transition, the children have been spending some time with the children in Orange Class. This helps us to become familiar with the new classroom and surroundings. Elsewhere around Silver Class and the children have been continuing to work on their counting skills and learning new phonetic sounds.

Orange Class Transition

Orange Class

Much of the focus around Orange class has all been about transition. This is quite a major move, as the children prepare to enter Key Stage 2 when we return for the new term in September. Orange class have been joining in some of the work and play with our friends in Red, Blue and Green class. Likewise we have welcomed some of the children from Silver class to share in our activities, as they look forward to moving up to Key Stage 1 in September. We like to familiarise all children with their new environment, and help them to be as comfortable as possible ahead of the new term.

Purple Class Vocabulary

Purple Class

Purple class have been playing activities to help us understand the terms different and the same. We have been using the whiteboards to play some games that help us with this task. A block of patterns appear on the screen. Three might be in red, one in blue. We ask the children to select either one that is different, or one that is the same. This is a also a great activity to help us with our colour recognition skills.

Red Class Play Preparation

Red class

Preparation for the Turney School end of term play is in full swing in Red Class. We have been practising our different roles as part of the grand Wicked Mr Wolf production. To help us out with some of the songs and the sign actions, red class have welcomed some of our friends from Yellow class into our sessions. All of the children are now familiar with the plot, and we have been thinking about the sequence in which the songs appear. With the grand performance almost upon us, there is tremendous excitement around Red class.

Green Class Soft Play

Green class

Green class had a great afternoon session spent in the soft play area this week. This is a very special time for our children as it provides them with a sensory space in which to play and explore each week. We plan these sessions so that they are towards the end of the school day, with the idea to send the children home in a clam and relaxed manner. We explore different colours and sounds in the soft play area, as well as stimulating our sense of touch.

Blue Class World Cup!

Blue class has been staging the Turney School World Cup this week! We have used our PE sessions to help the children learn and explore more about football, using our excitement of having watched some of the World Cup matches at home. We have helped the pupils to understand the basic rules of the games, as well as how all the players can work together as a team to try and score a goal. Our skill level has been improving, with some wonderful goals being scored by different members of Blue class. Some of the goal celebrations are rather fun as well! You can watch some of our Blue class football stars in the video above.

Welcome

Yellow Class PHSE

Yellow Class

Yellow class have been continuing their work looking at what it means to be a refugee, and what kind of emotions or feeling a refugee child might be experiencing. We had a Q & A session with a friend of the school who has been a refugee. Yellow class prepared for this by coming up with some very thoughtful questions, which helped us to understand the theme of going on a journey.

We are planning a trip to Brixton Market next week as part of our PSHE studies. We will be planning the journey on public transport, working out which route we need to take and how much bus fare we will need. We will also be thinking about what items we might like to buy, and where the best place at Brixton Market will be to make our purchase. This is a valuable exercise in not only being confident in being able to handle money, but also to ask for items in a public place and take part in community life.

Gold Class Assembly

Gold Class

Gold class are incredibly excited ahead of our French themed assembly in front of the rest of the school. Our pupils will be telling the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, but with a special French twist: La Chenille Qui Fait des Trous! Gold class have been learning French as part of our ongoing MFL lessons. We thought that the assembly would be the perfect opportunity to showcase out skills. The pupils will be using a series of translation cards to help the other children in the school follow the story. In particular we will be focussing upon the French days of the week, as well as the different food that the Hungry Caterpillar eats. Gold class will also be singing plenty of songs in French! You can catch a short preview of the assembly in the podcast below.

Class 8 Drama Video

A number of pupils from Class 8 have been involved in the highly successful Turney School ELA drama group. This is a weekly session where pupils who may need some extra support with their language skills come together and use drama to help boost confidence and raise abilities. We play a number of games, such as the memory table or the head band game, all designed to help the pupils work together and communicate effectively in small groups. A favourite within the drama group is musical squares. Each pupil picks a coloured card to stand on once the music has stopped. An adult randomly selects a colour from the hat. If we are standing on that colour then we are out of the game. You can watch a short video of musical squares being played by our ELA drama group above.

Class 8

Elsewhere around class 8 and we have started to think about our contribution for the Turney School Summer Fair. The pupils have decided to decorate some plain books with their own funky patterns, and then sell these on to help raise some money for the school. Using a number of D & T materials, we have been focussing on producing some repeating patterns. We will then take some photographs of these, and then use these images to help decorate the books with. As you can see from the picture gallery below, we have some wonderful ideas already being used for the books.

Class 9 RE Podcast

Class 9

We have been looking at different religious food laws as part of our humanities work in Class 9. We started off the session by asking the pupils what we thought is meant by the phrase food law. We had a class discussion about our own school rules, and how these help the school to be a happy place. Class 9 then suggested that some religions have a food law, to help members of the group eat a diet that respects their religious belief. We looked at Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Christianity. We found out that each religion has its own food laws that are respected by the followers. The pupils were then shown a number of different meals on the class whiteboard. We talked about what ingredients are needed for each meal, and then whether these would be suitable for certain religions to eat. One of our Class 9 pupils explains more in the podcast below.

Class 10 Science Podcast

Class 10

Class 10 have been learning and researching all about the human digestive system during our science lessons. The pupils have been looking at what happens to the food we eat, once it has been chewed and swallowed. We have been finding out how our digestive system works hard to break down different food, and allowing our body to function with the goodness that is contained within. Class 10 have also been looking at the main food groups, and finding out how protein, carbohydrates and fruit and veg are so important to help us grown and function. You can listen to one of our Class 10 pupils explain more in the podcast below.

Class 11

Class 11 have been busy preparing ahead of the Turney School Summer Fair. Our pupils have been thinking about the different activities that they would like to be involved in to help raise money for the school. Some of our pupils will be involved in the football penalty shoot out. We have also found a strong interest in helping to make some jewellery that will be available to buy on the day. Class 11 have been using their D & T time to produce some necklaces and bracelets.

With the Wicked Mr Wolf school play also approaching, we have also started to produce our costumes during our D & T lessons. A couple of our Class 11 roles have landed the roles of the two policemen in the play. We have been designing and making some police badges to help us in our roles. You can find out more in the podcast below, as well as having a look at some of our fine D & T work in the picture gallery.

Class 12 Boccia Finals

All of the Turney School community is incredibly proud of Class 12 as they prepare to represent us at the National finals of the boccia championships later in the week. This is an incredibly popular sport that we play throughout the year groups at Turney School. It resembles a form of bowls, and is perfect for pupils with special education needs to take part in. The rules require all competitors to remain seated, and so all players can compete equally.

Class 12 have showed tremendous skill and courage during the regional stages of the competition. Our reward is a place in the grand final, taking place at the Westway in West London. This is a tournament that has generated great interest – Sky Sports will be covering the event and featuring our skilful Class 12 boccia players!

Boccia is becoming something of a boom sport, and we are proud to be able to offer it to our pupils during PE sessions. Turney School is also the venue for competitive games, where we invite adults with special education needs to come along to help coach and play against our pupils. Some of the basic rules are explained in the video above, as well as a brief demonstration from our Class 12 stars.

Silver Class Topics

Silver Class

Silver class will be looking at different shapes for the remainder of the summer term. We will also concentrate on counting with the children, using various rhymes and songs to help us count and sort different objects. Creative development in Silver class will introduce the children to the idea of recognising different colours and to show an interest in the way musical sounds are made. We will also be adding in body movement to help the children respond to sound.

Orange Class Assembly

Orange class

Orange class have been putting in some final preparations ahead of their assembly later in the term. We are using the opportunity to share with the rest of the primary school all of our work about plants and growth. We will be explaining how all plants need light and water to grow. The children will be acting out this process, with a very special Orange class plant bursting out into bloom towards the end of the assembly. The remainder of the summer term will be spent helping the transition of the Orange class children to Key Stage 2 within Turney School. We will be helping the children to feel confident and comfortable in their new surroundings, as well as understanding the routine of the school day in Key Stage 2.

Purple Class Summer Term

Purple Class

The end of the school year may be approaching, but Purple class have plenty of work to see us through until the summer break! In numeracy we have been looking at place value. The idea is for the children to have an understanding of how many more or, or how many less, separate different numbers. We have been rolling up plasticine, and then cutting this up to help us with our sums. Our science work for the summer term involves sorting different materials. This is a very practical topic. The children will be feeling the different textures of each fabric, and then describing what is in front of them. Geography work in Purple class will have a seasonal element as we will be learning all about the different times of the year. Three Little Pigs will be the main reading book in Purple class. A busy time ahead!

Red Class Rehearsals

Red Class

Rehearsals are well under way in Red class for the prestigious end of term Turney School concert. We are performing Wicked Mr Wolf, a unique play that incorporates characters from both Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs. Red class have been practising many of the songs that all of the school will sing on the grand day. We are hopeful of also adding in some acting and dancing parts. We have been using our rehearsal time to try and see which pupils would like to take up one of these roles. This week we rehearsed the performance from start to finish, to try and get a good understanding of the timings involved. This is the first time that Turney School has staged a grand musical as the end of year performance. We are all incredibly excited! You can listen to some of the Red class singing in the podcast below.

Green Class Phonetics

Green class

Green class have been working on different ways that we can recognise letters. The pupils have been using a combination symbols on the class whiteboard, music, as well as remembering the different signs for each letters. We have used our class circle time to choose a letter each, and then to sound out the phonetic sound that we can hear. We then advanced this, by thinking of a word that starts with that letter.
