Silver Class Settling In

Silver Class

Our new Silver Class has made a new super start to the Turney School year. We have spent our first few days welcoming all of the new children and getting to know the names of our new friends. This is the first stage in the settling in process. The aim is to allow each child to feel happy and safe in their new school surrounding.

We have been carrying out some very early work using the Silver Class whiteboard. Each class member has been encouraged to use the whiteboard and feel familiar with this resource – it is something that they will be using frequently throughout their time at Turney School!

Orange Class Friendships

Welcome

To prepare us for our new friendships ahead, Orange Class have been learning all about how children can play together and how to make this a happy time for everyone. We watched a short video featuring some young children playing in a playground. We then held a class discussion to help the children recount the events.

We thought about where the children were playing, how they felt when they were playing, and what might make them happy in the playground. All Orange class pupils were encouraged and supported to share their views. Working as a class, we then came up with different ways that help to make playtime a happy occasion for all of our friends.

This has been a great start to the new term for everyone in Orange Class. We have also spent time getting familiar with our new timetables, and understanding the structure of the Turney School day.

Purple Class Sea Topic

Purple Class

We have many new topics lined up for the pupils in Purple Class for this term. Our literacy theme will focus on fish stories. The children will be carrying out plenty of work all around the Under the Sea book. We have bought some new sensory resources especially to help us out with this aquatic work. The more able children will be encouraged to read and then re-write the Under the Sea story. We will work closely with other pupils to help find strategies so that they can also appreciate the themes and ideas in the story.

Our numeric work will be looking at plus and minus mathematical operations, shapes and basic money problems. We are going to set up our own Purple Class shop to help us with our money work! Science work will involve self-identification. We want to get to know more about our body parts and how they work. This will be supported with plenty of artwork. A busy time ahead in Purple Class!

Red Class Transition

Red Class

Red Class have had a relaxing start to the new school term with swimming and time spent in the soft playroom featuring heavily after the long summer break. Our weekly swimming lessons at Crystal Palace have resumed. These are then backed up with quality time spent in the soft play area. Both activities are great for exploring different sensory skills, and allowing each pupil to understand more about their own bodies and reactions.

This is an important transition year for most of our pupils in Red Class. Making the move up from Key Stage 1 is a major event as our pupil’s progress through Turney School. Red Class have managed this move in a smooth manner.

Blue Class French Lessons

Blue Class

We will be continuing our weekly French lessons in Blue Class throughout the autumn term. We started off our first session with a un, deux, trois – shhhhh! And then a lovely Bonjour to all of class friends as we welcomed one another to our French class.

All of the Blue Class pupils now feel confident with greeting family and friends in French. We will be working on the days of the week as we continue to improve our French language ability.

Tres bien!

Yellow Class Singing Podcast

Yellow Class

Learning the Turney School rules is obviously very important – this doesn’t mean that this exercise can’t be fun though! For our weekly singing assembly, Yellow Class have been singing the school rules in a specially written song.

Plenty words of wisdom are contained within: Don’t run down corridors; don’t throw rubbish on the floor! We are learning, we are learning…

You can listen to a short snippet of this song in the podcast below.

Class 1M Table Work

Class 1M

Class 1M have wasted no time in getting to grips with their new table work for this term. This is an activity where we can work in small groups, as well as setting specific tasks that are geared towards the learning needs and targets of each pupil. Our overall main theme has been that of colours and what we can see around us. The pupils worked off a series of worksheets showing different nature scenes, with some words and signs underneath. We asked the pupils to match up an image with the wording.

Handwriting has also been practiced here, with each child then writing out the simple sentence below. Using word and picture recognition to help with our literacy is a form of teaching that we will be continuing with Class 1M throughout the rest of the autumn term.

Class 1G Science

Class 1g

We have been working with batteries and switches as part of our science work in Class 1G. We wanted the pupils to understand how every electrical circuit requires a power source in order for it to work. We studied circuits without a battery, and then observed the difference when we placed a battery in the correct place in the circuit. This was also a large part of the task – knowing where to place the battery in order to power up a light bulb. This science work will continue each week, as we build in new features for our circuit and start to learn more about electricity and safety.

Class 2S Singing

Class 2S

For the start of the new school year, Class 2S are learning some new songs that we will be working on and improving throughout the remainder of the autumn term. We have been helped along in learning these new words by explaining the signing for each song, and sharing these with all of our friends. As you can hear in the podcast below – we’ve already had a brilliant response from class 2S!

Class 3J P.E. Video

New school year, new football season for Class 3J! As part of our early P.E. sessions, we have been focusing on close ball control and our one-on-one skills. Working with our partners, we tried to out-fox one another during a short game using the small goal nets. As well as the excitement of scoring, we also emphasised the importance of fair play and taking a friendly approach to football. We had handshakes all round at the end! You can watch a short video featuring Class 3J practicing their football above.

Class 10 Leisure Studies

Class 11

As part of the leisure syllabus, Class 10 have been focusing on current affairs and recent news stories. We watched a short broadcast, and then answered some questions about the news agenda.

Areas covered included the environment, science stories and space travel. This is an important part of the curriculum in helping the Class 10 pupils to understand more about the world around them.

Later on during our leisure studies we will be planning our dream holiday. The pupils will be thinking of a worldwide location where they would like to visit, and then plan what they might need to take, as well as some of the activities that they can relax with.

Class 11 Artwork

Class 11

Class 11 have been creating a series of self-portraits to try and understand more about ourselves. We talked about different techniques that we could use to help us with this exercise. These included placing a cross on a sheet of paper, and then using this as a guideline when working out where to place our eyes, ears and nose etc. All of the pupils were working off a digital photo that had been taken by a friend. This has proven to be a great exercise in self-awareness, as well as producing some rather fine artwork.
