Orange Class Singing

Orange Class

The final few weeks of the summer term for Orange Class have been spent in transition. We have welcomed a whole new class of pupils to Orange Class, ahead of the work that we will be starting in September. We want to make this move up as smooth as possible – the best way to achieve this is through one of our always enjoyable singing assemblies! You can listen to the new Orange Class pupils taking part in one of these sessions in the podcast below.

Purple Class Transition

Welcome

Our new Purple Class pupils are settling in very well at Turney School. The transition to new year groups ahead of the start of the school year in September helps the pupils to have a little more time to get familiar with the adults and new surroundings. In Purple Class we have been making this move easier with a number of games, as well as plenty of reading of our favourite books.

The Enormous Turnip has proven to be a very popular story so far in Purple Class. The pupils have loved the story of how all the adults and animals at the farm had to work together in order to pull out the enormous turnip from the ground. We have been acting out the scenes, and playing along with our class friends. We have also started to read The Gingerbread, another book that is a great favourite in Purple Class.

Class 2S Science Video

Our science work in Class 2S has been focussed on looking at the earth, moon and the sun. We wanted the pupils to try and distinguish different features and to describe what they can see. We started off by thinking about the colours of the earth, moon and sun. We then talked about physical features, and what we might be able to find. Finally we started to think about the temperatures and which might be the hottest or coldest out of the three.

We presented out work in a series of fact sheets. We encouraged the pupils to share the facts with their class friends, and to explain the knowledge that we have learnt. Some of the pupils have also been working with models of the earth and the moon. You can see how the moon rotates around the earth in the video above.

Class 3J Art Video

Class 3J have just completed a wonderful art project. We asked the pupils to think about being on a fantasy island. We tried to imagine that we were explorers and managed to find a rare bird that no else has ever seen before. We wanted Class 3J to think about the features that we might see on the birds around us, and then to use their imaginations to come up with a unique profile. What is the name of the bird, what does it look like and what food does it eat? You can hear some of the amazing ideas being explained in the video above.

Gold Medal Boccia Success!

Boccia success

Our Turney School boccia team returned home triumphant from the London Olympic Youth Games at Crystal Palace as the Gold medal winners! This was an amazing achievement for our combined team of pupils comprising of Year 5 and Year 6 students. We competed against schools from 31 boroughs throughout London – Turney remained undefeated at both ends during each game!

Boccia is a sport that we take incredibly seriously around Turney School. It gives the pupils plenty of pleasure and is a very inclusive activity, allowing pupils of all abilities to compete on a similar level. We are incredibly proud of our Turney School boccia gold medal winners.

Class 10 Food Tech Video

Our cooking work in Class 10A has been concentrating on coming up with a variety of different dishes, as well as thinking about the techniques required for each meal. We have been learning to understand the difference between boiling and simmering, and when each method is most suitable for us to use in the kitchen.

Having successfully cooked a delicious spaghetti bolognaise dish, we recently turned out attention towards chile con carne. We asked the pupils to consider not only the preparation for this meal, but also how we might be able to store the food and take it home.

After we finished the practical side of the exercise, we then asked Class 10A to think about how they might be able to evaluate their dish. Taste and ease of cooking were a couple of factors. All of this work is being documented by Class 10A in our recipe books. Once completed, we will have instructions and thoughts on all of our Class 10A cooking experiences throughout the school year.

Welcome

Smiles at Sumer Fair

Turney School Summer Fair

One of the annual highlights of the Turney School year is always the Summer Fair that we hold in July. The pupils and adults have been working on ideas towards this for many weeks now. The aim is for all pupils throughout Turney School to enjoy and participate in the activities. Our Secondary school pupils helped to run the main stalls, with our friends from Primary school being invited to take part in the activities.

Some of the stalls this summer included Splat the Rat, Catch a Fish, a book and toy stall, face painting, a jewellery sale of items made during D & T sessions, bowling and a cake and drinks stall.

All money raised will be spent on a cause chosen by our Turney School Council over the coming weeks. It was great to see so many parents being able to come out and support the Summer Fair. We greatly value your continued help within our school community. You can see a selection of photos from the afternoon in the gallery below.
