Purple Class Table Work

Purple Class

Purple Class have been learning about different features found on the human face as part of our science work at the start of the new term. To help us with this we have been playing with a large jigsaw on the class whiteboard. Each puzzle was a picture of a child showing a different emotion. Our task was to complete the jigsaw and make sure that the eyes, ears, nose and mouth were all moved into the correct place on the completed jigsaw.

We continued with this theme during our table work in Purple Class. We presented each pupil with a picture of a human face, but with many of the defining details missing. We asked the children to draw in the correct places all of the missing features. Our work in Purple Class will continue throughout the term learning more about ourselves.

Red Class Circle Time

Red Class

We have been using our circle time in Red Class to help encourage the children to be able to make their own choices and decisions. Working with a large box of different toys, we asked the class which pupil would like to choose a toy to explore. We wanted each class member to be able to express themselves and communicate that they would like to choose from the box, as well as making a personal decision. All the toys available helped the pupils with their touch and sight senses. This circle time exercise is also great for improving communication skills and gaining confidence amongst class friends.

Our circle time continued in Red Class with a different exercise but with a focus on the same aim of expression. We added a number of different colours of sand into a large wooden tray. We asked each pupil which colours they would like to see, as well as what amount of sand was to be used. When we had enough sand to play with, we then asked which pupils would like to make some patterns in the sand. Much of our shared circle time throughout the autumn term in Red Class will continue with exercises that encourage both choice and communication from the class members.

Green Class Transition

Green Class

Our early work in Green Class for the start of the autumn term has been to make the transition to KS2 as easy as possible for all of our pupils. We have also welcomed into Green Class a number of pupils that are new to Turney School. We have been playing plenty of social games to help get to know one another, as well as talking about what is different about KS2 as we all get settled into the new school timetable and routine.

We are also starting to look forward to our first class assembly for the new term. Green Class will act out their own version of the Bear Hunt in front of our other friends from around the school. We are focussing on the many actions involved that will help us to put across the Bear Hunt story.

Blue Class RE

Blue Class

Our RE work for this term in Blue Class will help the children to be able to identify different religious buildings, and to explain why some of the features are important. We started off this work by looking at a Mosque. We showed the Blue Class pupils a model of Mosque with some of the main features visible from the outside.

We then invited the Blue Class members to describe what they could see, and to point out some of the features to the rest of the pupils. We identified doors, special shaped windows and the large dome and moon crescent that is found on the roof of a Mosque. We then looked at some photographs on the class whiteboard of some real life Mosques. We asked the children to mach up the features on these with those on our own Blue Class model. We will be continuing this exercise throughout the autumn term, looking at places of worship for other major world religions.

Yellow Class Reading Skills

Yellow Class

Our table activities in Yellow Class during the first few weeks of the autumn term have been focussed on helping all pupils with their reading skills. We have put in place a series of different activities for the different ability levels of our class members. Some pupils have been looking at pictures of boys and girls carrying out activities such as running, jumping, skipping and reading.

We then asked the pupils to make a complete sentence out of the images that we could see: The boy is running. The girl is reading, etc. We shared these amongst our class friends to help improve our confidence when working in small groups.

Class 2S Maths Video

Class 2S are spending the early part of the autumn term learning about different coins during our maths lessons. We set the learning objective of being able to identify coins, as well as being able to describe different forms of currency.

We started off the session by introducing the pupils to a selection of different coins. We asked each class member to describe them, looking at different colours, sizes and feel. One of class members was able to explain that the edges of coins feel different so that anyone with a sight disability is able to identify the coins.

We finished off the Class 2S maths lesson by playing a game on the class whiteboard to help us with our work. You can watch a short video of this above.

Class 3J PE Video

We have been building upon our enthusiasm for the London Olympics in Class 3J during our PE lessons. We asked the pupils about their observations from watching the athletics at the Olympics over the summer. Some pupils described how they saw athletes stretching and warming up ahead of their main races.

We encouraged Class 3J to warm up with a series of individual exercises ahead of our main activity during the lesson. We focussed on changing our pace and direction, as well as exercising our arms as part of the activity. Finally we added in the difference between jogging and sprinting.

With Class 3J now warmed up, we were ready for the main part of lesson. Much of our PE work for the autumn term will be spent helping to improve our football skills. We are starting off by looking at close ball control and why this is important in a game situation. You can watch a short video of a recent Class 3J PE lesson above.

Class 11 Art Podcast

Class 11

Class 11 have settled well into the new term at Turney School during what is an incredibly important academic year for all pupils. Some class members will be sitting various GCSE subjects to help prepare them for their next stage of development. Art is always a subject in which Turney School manages to achieve highly at GCSE level. Our current Class 11 members have already started work on their coursework for this qualification.

With many different levels of ability throughout the group, different activities have been set. Some pupils are looking at the style associated with African art. We have been studying some of the ideas of Chris Ofilli, and then taking inspiration from these for our own artwork. Different techniques and mediums are being explored.

Some of our more advanced Class 11 pupils are taking a multi-media approach to their artwork. Using the Turney School ICT resources, we have been manipulating digital self-portraits. A photograph was taken, and then using image-editing software, the pupils have created a new self-identity out of their self-portrait. You can listen to this process being explained in the podcast below.
