Silver Class Assembly

Silver Class

All of the pupils in Silver Class are very excited about our first ever Turney School assembly! This is quite a major moment as the new starters build up the confidence to present their work to our other friends from around the school. The theme for our assembly will be to introduce ourselves to the other classes. Silver Class will sing a greetings song so that everyone knows who we are.

Back in the classroom and the children are making some wonderful progress with their literacy and maths work. We are reading the book Where’s Spot, and in particular thinking about prepositions. This covers phrases such as behind, in front of, inside, outside etc.

Meanwhile our maths work in Silver Class continues with plenty of learning about shapes. Most children are now able to recognise the many different shapes, as well as talk about how many sides that they may have.

Orange Class Fruit Guessing

Orange Class

Orange Class have been learning about different types of fruit during our recent Guess the Fruit game. We showed some pictures of fruits, some that we recognised, and others that were new to us. We asked the children to look at the pictures on the class writeboard and to try and identify the fruit.

We encouraged Orange Class to talk about what the fruit looks like, what it might taste like and even what it could possibly be used for in the kitchen. As well as pronouncing the name of each fruit, we helped out the children with the relevant sign that we use for the fruit.

This work will continue in Orange Class until the end of term. We are working towards designing, and then making a healthy snack. We want the children to think about the tastes that they prefer, and then to think about how this could be used successfully in a meal.

Purple Class Updates

Purple Class

Purple Class have been on safari! Our literacy work has involved reading about the many animals that we can expect to find on a safari hunt. We have built into the work some numeracy by learning how to count in Swahili.

Our science topic of All About Ourselves has continued. Having learnt and identified many of the body parts, Purple Class have now been thinking about how we can take care of our bodies. With winter approaching, the children have been learning about how we need to keep warm, and which materials can help us with this.

Yellow Class Maths Video

Yellow Class have been making some tremendous progress with their counting skills during recent numeracy lessons. Working in small groups, we set a number of different challenges for the different abilities in our class.

Some pupils concentrated on counting the number of animals that they could see on their sheet. These were grouped into different sets. Our next step for this exercise was to work out the difference. If one set contained five horses, whilst another had only three, we could work out that the difference is two horses.

Other groups in Yellow Class were able to add. In some literacy work along with our maths. We asked the pupils to read out a selection of sentences on the worksheet. These related to number of items that either a girl, boy or man had, e.g. the girl has three apples. Our task was to find the picture of three apples, and then place this correctly in the column for the girl. You can watch a short video of this exercise above.

Finally our maths session concluded with the children practicing the writing of various numbers. Character formation is incredibly important if we are to understand the number line. We need to identify the different numbers to help us with our counting.

Great work, Yellow Class!

Class 1M Literacy

Class 1M

Class 1M have been making some amazing improvements during recent literacy lessons. Working with the learning intention of finding the first letter of a word, we watched a simple story being narrated on the class whiteboard. Some words in the story were missing. The children were then presented with a choice of possible replacements. The narrator read out the work, and we had to listen to what sound the word started with.

The adults helped Class 1M in thinking about the sound at they can hear at the start of various words. Phonics is an incredibly important part of literacy and word formation for our pupils at Turney School. We finished off this literacy lesson by asking the pupils to find items in the whiteboard that share a similar phonetic sound at the start. We managed to locate a football, a fly and a piece of fruit.

Class 1G Science

Class 1G

We have been greatly impressed by our Class 1G pupils who have been working independently to create an electrical circuit during science lessons. We started off our work by learning about the three key components that we need for a circuit: a power source, some wire to carry the electricity and a device that can be powered by the circuit.

Working with light bulbs for this experiment, the pupils have learnt that power needs to flow around the circuit. The wire needs to go to the battery, and then from the battery to the light bulb, before heading back to the battery once again.

Once we had established this, we set the challenge for our Class 1G pupils to fix a broken circuit. We removed one of the three key components, and then asked our young scientists to rebuild the circuit. A great success!

Class 2S Abstract Art

Class 2S have produced some wonderful abstract portraits during our art sessions. We have introduced the pupils to the work of some of the famous abstract artists such as Picasso. We wanted them to observe and understand how a picture needn’t always represent the actual image being viewed.

Each class member then chose a picture of a face. We carefully cut this up into smaller pieces. Our artistic task was to then rearrange these smaller pictures, not quite in the correct order, but to make sure that the overall image of a face was still visible.

Class 3J P.E.

Class 3J

Class 3J have been practicing their throwing and catching skills during recent P.E. sessions. Working together as a group the class members formed a large circle in the school gym. The class member holding the ball then had to choose a friend’s name to call out, ahead of throwing the ball to them.

We speed up this exercise, and then added in two balls. All pupils had to stay alert, as well as thinking on the spot who they were going to throw the ball to next. This is a great exercise to improve our hand to eye coordination. It will help the pupils when we advance this activity and build it into a simple game of basketball.

Class 11 GCSE Artwork

Class 11

We have been continuing our artwork in Class 11 in celebration of Lack History Month. Our pupils have been inspired by some of the design work of Chris Ofili and the colourful approach that he takes towards portraits.

Using this idea as our starting point, our Class 11 pupils have produced a dries of self-portraits using a variety of mixed media. Both collage materials and pairing techniques have been used in our designs. We have encouraged all pupils to work independently, choosing their materials as well as collecting and cutting these for the final design.

The pupils working towards their GCSE Entry Level in Art have taken this project a stage further. A digital self-image was captured, which we then used as the outline for our self-portraits. Some very fine printing techniques were then used to capture the colourful theme found in Ofili’s work. As you can see from the photos below, the effect is quite stunning.

Countdown to Christmas!

Countdown to Christmas

The Countdown to Christmas has started at Turney School! This is the title of our annual seasonal production – always one of the highlights in the Turney calendar. This year all children throughout the school will be working together on a production that looks forward to Christmas. There are plenty of activities to organise – decorating the Christmas tree, buying presents and remembering why this time of year is so special for Christians.

The Turney School Countdown to Christmas production will capture all of this excitement through music and drama. Many of the pupils have started work on the varied acting parts that are available. Our brilliant Turney School choir will be helping out with the singing and signing of the songs. All parents and carers of Turney pupils are invited to the performance. It will take place at the school on 4th December, 2pm. You can catch a very early sneak preview in the podcast below.
