Saying goodbye to our departing Class 11 students at Turney School is never an easy task. Our annual Leaver’s Assembly is always one of the more emotional events in the school calendar. 2013 was no exception, with plenty of reflection on all that has been achieved, plus also a positive look towards what the future might hold for the five young adults that will be leaving us.
We started the Leaver’s Assembly with a welcome message from Head Teacher Mrs Adams. We heard how she has personally taken great pride in seeing the pupils mature throughout their development at Turney School. Mrs Adams mentioned that this has now reached a natural conclusion – all Class 11 students are now ready to move on to fresh challenges.
The uplifting Turney School Choir kept the occasion upbeat with a brilliant performance of the Turney School Song. We are proud of our school and we are proud of this song. It explains what it means to be a Turney pupil or staff member, and how important our school community is in supporting one another.
It was then time for the traditional speeches to celebrate the academic and social life of each departing Class 11 pupil. One by one we invited Tamsin, Vishal, Mika, Bruno and Jermaine to the front of the assembly. Individual teachers delivered a personal message, reflecting on their memories of each student. We heard some fantastic tales recalling some incredibly happy, funny and sometimes reflective moments. Tales of past school trips were shared, as well as the powerful friendships that have been formed.
Thankfully the Turney School Choir was always close at hand before the occasion became too emotional! We had some superb solo performances, as well as a contribution from the brilliant Turney School Drummers.
The Leaver’s Assembly came to a close when we welcomed some friends from Lambeth College into our school. Class 11 have been attending the College on a weekly basis to help support their transition to further independence. Certificates were awarded in recognition of the work that has been achieved at Lambeth College. This was the perfect ending for the Leaver’s Assembly – it left all staff, students and visitors full of optimism for what lies ahead. It also demonstrates the value of a transition policy and the relationship with Lambeth College that is so special to us.
This incredibly special afternoon for the young adults in Class 11 came to a close with a special tea party in the Turney School Art Room. The pupils had presented a display to showcase their fine artistic achievements during their recent GCSE artwork exams. We invited parents and carers into the Art Room to show them around our work.
We would like to thank the many parents, carers and friends in the Turney School community who were able to support Class 11 during this very special occasion. It is always wonderful to welcome friends into our school. All teaching staff are of course incredibly sad to be seeing these fine young adults move. We do believe however that they are all ready for the next stage in their development as young adults. We wish Tamsin, Vishal, Mika, Bruno and Jermaine every success. Please do come back and share your future achievements.
