Lambeth Council Courses for Parents and Carers

Lambeth Council is offering a number of courses for parents. These will take place throughout the summer term.

Family Literacy (25 hours)

This is a 10 week course available on a Monday , Wednesday or Thursday morning starting on the week commencing 23/04/18. Each session is 2.5 hours duration the first 2 hours (approx.) is for the parents only and then the children join in for the last part of the session (approx. 30mins). The course is suitable for parents and children in Key stage 1. Recent research conducted by the Institute of Education on behalf of the Nuffield Foundation found that children who attended these courses made significant progress compared to their peers.

Family Language (ESOL) (25 Hours)

This is a 10 week course available on a Tuesday morning or afternoon or Friday morning or afternoon starting on the week commencing 23/04/18. Each session is 2.5 hours duration. The course is for parents only. The course is designed for parents with ESOL needs. Course content is focussed upon the skills needed by parents to engage with their child’s school, health professionals and the wider community. Topics include parts of the body and common terms used in school e.g literacy or number lines.

Family Numeracy (25 hours)

This is a 10 week course available on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday mornings or afternoons starting on the week commencing 23/04/18. Each session is 2.5 hours duration the first 2 hours (approx.) is for the parents only and then the children join in for the last part of the session (approx. 30mins). The course is suitable for parents and children in Key stage 1.

Keeping up with the Children (10 hours – 2 full days)

This is a 2 day course with days and times to be negotiated (we are looking to put this on during the end of term 2). Each day is 5 hours duration and is for the parents only. The course will give parents an introduction to the key terms and themes used in literacy or numeracy at school and how best to support their child. The course can be adapted for Key stage 1 or 2.

Give your child the best start at Nursery (15 Hours)

This is a 5 week course that introduces parents to the Early Years Foundation Stage. The course runs on a Monday afternoon, Wednesday morning or Friday starting on the week commencing 23/4/18 and again on the week commencing 11/06/18. The 5 week courses are 3 hours duration per week. Each session is 3 hours duration the first 2 -2.5hours (approx.) is for the parents only and then they join their children in the nursery for the last part of the session (approx. 30mins). If you can only fit in a 2 hour session we may be able to run the course with a day trip for the parents to make up the hours.

Give your child the best start in Reception (15 Hours)

This is a 5 week course that introduces parents to the Reception year. The course runs on a Monday afternoon, Wednesday morning or Friday starting on the week commencing 23/4/18 and again on the week commencing 26/02/18. The 5 week courses are 3 hours duration per week. Each session is 3 hours duration the first 2 -2.5hours (approx.) is for the parents only and then they join their children in the nursery for the last part of the session (approx. 30mins). If you can only fit in a 2 hour session we may be able to run the course with a day trip for the parents to make up the hours.

Family Art- Making Mosaic and Ceramics to sell (30 hours)

This is an 8 week course available on a Wednesday morning starting on the week commencing 23/04/18. Each session is 3 hours duration the first 2.5 hours (approx.) is for the parents only and then the children join in for the last part of the session (approx. 30mins). The last session is a day selling the products created at a local market. The course is suitable for parents and children of all ages. During this course the families will create beautiful products to be sold at a market or school event. These will be mosaic and/or ceramic (and/or jewellery if requested). The funds raised can be used to support the PTA or another school / children’s centre event is applicable

Family Art – Making and Sewing Textiles to sell (30 hours)

This is an 8 week course available on a Wednesday morning starting on the week commencing 23/04/18. Each session is 3 hours duration and the course is for parents only. The last session is a day selling the products created at a local market. The course is suitable for parents and children of all ages. During this course the families will create beautiful products to be sold at a market or school event. These will be cushion covers and pillowcases (and maybe other projects depending upon the learners starting point). The funds raised can be used to support the PTA or another school / children’s centre event is applicable. All sewing machines are supplied by us.

Family Art – Making a Community Mosaic (30 hours)

This is an 8 week course available on a Thursday morning starting on the week commencing 23/04/18. Each session is 3 hours duration the first 2 hours (approx.) is for the parents only and then the children join in for the last part of the session (approx. 60mins , but this can be negotiated according to the needs of your setting). During the course the learners will design and create a large Mosaic that can be displayed in your school or centre. The mosaic will be completed and installed within 6 weeks after the course ends. The course also entails a visit to a local art gallery.

Family Art – Sew a Story (textile banner) (30 hours)

This is a 9 week course available on a Tuesday afternoon starting on the week commencing 23/04/18. Each session is 3 hours duration and the course is for parents only. During the course the learners will design and create a large community sewn fabric banner for that can be displayed in your school or centre. The course also entails a visit to the Horniman gallery.

Family Art – Let’s Get Creative (30 hours)

This is an 8 week course available on a Monday morning starting on the week commencing 23/04/18. Each session is 3 hours duration the first 2.5 hours (approx.) is for the parents only and then the children join in for the last part of the session (approx. 30mins). During the course the families will create a number of works of art using a wide range of techniques and materials. The artwork will result in an exhibition or display taking place in your school or centre. The course also entails a visit to a local art gallery.

Family Art – Robots and Machine making – (12 hours)

This is a 4 week course the days and times are negotiable. Ideally the course would take place on a Saturday although it is possible to run during the school day or after school (or a combination of all 3). Each session is 3 hours duration and the parents and children work together throughout the whole session. During the course the families will explore the impact of robots and machines in our society and each week will make a robot from a range of materials culminating in making a working mechanical robot in the final week.

E Safety for parents (4 hours – 1 day)

This is a 1 day course available on a Friday .Each day is 4 hours duration and is for parents only. The course will give parents an introduction to ensuring their children stay safe when online. It will also address keeping the parents safe from fraudulent emails and scams. This course does not require the use of an ICT suite. If you are unable to take a full 4 hour course , we may be able to run some short 2 hour courses in the afternoons on Monday , Tuesday , Wednesday or Thursday.
