Class 11JB Food Tech Instructions and Choices

Food tech learning in Class 11JB this term has helped the students to follow instructions and make choices. The lessons are set up to help the students feel comfortable in the Turney kitchen space. This is quite a change from our previous setting of working in the Class 11JB classroom.

Each student is made aware of what they can expect at the start of each lesson. Picture cards are used so that the class members can see the sequence of events that will take place.

On the menu during a recent lesson was a fruit crumble. Our first instruction was to to wear an apron and wash our hands. The students are encouraged to take responsibility for these tasks themselves.

Some choosing then took place. The students had to decide which fruit filling they would like in their crumble. There was a choice of pears, pineapples or apricot.

Each student then followed the picture recipe instructions. They key skills for this session were chopping and mixing.

The class members were asked to choose which spice they would like to add for the flavouring. Nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon were smelt by the students to help them to decide.

The final step was to prepare the crumble using oats, flour, butter and syrup. We then placed our crumbles in the oven and set the timer.

Each class member was able to bake a tasty fruit crumble to take home and share with family and friends.
