Some of the Class 2S pupils at Turney School have recently demonstrated some fantastic improvements during our daily guided reading sessions. This is an early morning opportunity for all secondary school students to focus on their reading skills and share a love of books.
Most of this work has involved a heavy use of phonics learning. The main learning intention here is for the students to recognise a certain sound, and then break down a simple word into the sounds that we can hear.
This is achieved by using a combination of different letters and then asking the pupils to form a word with these. The teaching staff constantly ask the pupils to sound out the combination of letters that are in front of them.
Class 2S have also been practising their letter formation as part of the early morning literacy sessions. These lessons are usually brought to a close with the students completing a spelling test.
