Blue Class have been making great progress with our weekly French lessons. Having learnt the basics such as introducing our names and knowing our ages etc, we are now moving on to ask our friends about how they are feeling. We are also learning how to offer up a suitable response. Much of this work is carried out through the use of music.

Later on in the term and we will introduce Blue Class to a series of pictures. We will be using these to help tell our own Blue Class French story. Tres bien, Bleu Class!

As part of our continuing work looking at different world religions, Blue Class have been learning all about the rituals associated with Hindu prayer. The pupils took part in an interactive session on the whiteboard, showing the importance that Hindus place on the worship of a shrine. We learnt how some Hindu families might have a shrine in their own home, and how Hindu children might go about praying to the shrine as part of their daily routine.

We also demonstrated this in the classroom, with a table converted into a temporary shrine, with all the relevant objects placed in the correct order. Blue Class took it in turns to remember the name of the objects of worship, and then to explain how a Hindu child might use these as part of their religion.

As part of our R.E. work in Blue Class, we have been learning all about the different parts of a church. The children have been studying diagrams and plans of a church, and then talking about what type of activity takes place in each sacred space.

We have used this exercise to also help us with our spelling and signing. Some beautiful pieces of work have been produced, labeling and explaining what we can expect to find in a Christian place of worship. You can find out more by listening to the podcast below.

We will be continuing our weekly French lessons in Blue Class throughout the autumn term. We started off our first session with a un, deux, trois – shhhhh! And then a lovely Bonjour to all of class friends as we welcomed one another to our French class.

All of the Blue Class pupils now feel confident with greeting family and friends in French. We will be working on the days of the week as we continue to improve our French language ability.

Our new blue Class members have all been settling into their new class ahead of the new term of teaching starting in September. This has been a very positive start for all of the pupils as they get to know both their new class friends, as well as the adults that we will be working with in the new school year.

We have been playing plenty of welcome games so that we can all get to know one another. We have asked each pupil to choose a picture of a class friend from the whiteboard. We all then sing a song, welcoming our friends to Blue Class, as well as recording each other saying hello to everyone.

Blue Class has also started to keep a daily weather diary. This encourages us to explore our outdoors environment, as well as helping with speech and recognition of the weather outside. We have also used this opportunity to help with the painting of a new mural in the school playground – great fun!

Blue Class have returned to Turney School after the short Whitsun break with a tremendous interest in continuing with their fine maths work. We have been thrilled at the level of work that some pupils are completing, so much so that we really wanted to share it in the video above!

We are working on basic algebra sums that are based on addition. We have encouraged the children to use different strategies to help solve these. Some of the class members like to use buttons to help them organise their thought process; others work with mental maths in their head. This has been a great start to the second half of the summer term for Blue Class – more to come hopefully!

We have been continuing our Food Tech work in Blue Class by following a sequence of instructions to make a healthy sandwich. As well as addressing the healthy lifestyle element of the curriculum, these sessions are also superb in helping the children to understand and carry out instructions in sequence.

We always start out lessons by looking at the instructions that we need to successfully to complete the task. Preparation is put in place to make sure that all of the ingredient and kitchen utensils are available. The teaching takes the form of an adult demonstrating one stage at a time the process, and then we offer support for all pupils as they prepare their food.

On the menu for this session was a tasty cheese, celery, pepper and mayonnaise sandwich. We had some tricky tasks to carry out, such as the chopping of the vegetables into small pieces. As you can see from the video above, Blue Class had a brilliant food Tech session, with all of the instructions understood and carried out in the correct order.

Blue class have been getting use to the kitchen and cooking routine during our recent Food Tech lessons. We have been learning how planning and preparation is always very important when working in the kitchen. Washing our hands and wearing a clean apron is always a good start!

We have been working towards designing and then making our own sandwiches in Blue Class. The children first decided if they preferred the taste of bread slices, or a bread roll. We then followed the sequence of instructions, starting off by buttering our bread, and then deciding upon our favourite filling.

The children had a choice of cheese, ham or tuna. We also had tomatoes and cucumber to add to the taste. Some careful grating or chopping then followed, and soon it was time to taste what we had produced. You can find out more about the Blue Class Food Tech sandwich session in the video above.

Blue Class have been busy this term telling the time! This is an essential life skill that we all need in our daily routines. We have introduced the children to the two hands on a traditional clock, and then how the sequence of numbers goes up as the day progresses. This is a very practical topic to teach, and so of course it wouldn’t be complete without Blue Class making their own clocks! With our clocks now made, Blue Class have been able to answer different time related questions.

We have been incredibly busy in Blue Class, making many wonderful creations during our D & T sessions, as well as baking some bread in our Food Tech lessons! As part of our study of houses and shelters, Blue Class have used their D & T time to build some Indian teepees. We have been looking at how different people around the world live in different places. The teepees seemed like a great challenge for us to make. The children used clay as a base, and then completed their models with some pipe cleaners and some cloth. As you can see from the video above, Blue Class now has its very own Indian teepee village!

We are fortunate to have an incredibly talented collection of young artists in Blue Class, who greatly enjoy all D & T aspects of the Turney School curriculum. These skills have been used by Blue Class to help build a series of shelters, as part of our class topic of looking at homes and how people and animals need some form of shelter. We encouraged the children to think first about whom they wanted to build a shelter for. We asked them to describe what it might need to look like, and what sort of size and shape would be appropriate. Using clay, our young sculptures modelled their shelters from the designs that they had thought out. Once these are dry, we will then add in the detail of the colour.
