Our Class 11 pupils have been working hard towards their GCSE qualification in Art. Some pupils have started to work on their assessed work under exam conditions. Other pupils are continuing with their coursework. One of the themes for the qualification this year is to look at established pieces of art, and then to add a personal interpretation using different multi-media. We have been looking at the value that adding 3D elements to our work can add.

Class 2S are continuing to learn about the history of music during our weekly sessions with the Turney School keyboards. We have been looking at a musical timeline, starting off with the first instance of music being written down, and finishing in modern times with the wide use of mp3 players.

Our current focus is on the Baroque period. Class 2S listened to various pieces of Baroque music and then explained what they could hear. We noticed that the music follows a pattern, going from high, to low, to high and then back down to low again.

Working with the Turney School keyboards, the pupils then started to learn some simple Baroque sequences. We. Have been playing Bach’s Toccata and Fuge. This was our first session working with Baroque music. As you can see from the video above, Class 2S have produced some positive results.

We have introduced Class 2S to playing their own keyboards during our music workshops. We asked the pupils to explore the keyboard and to see what type of sounds are possible to achieve. We were able to identify which keys relate to high notes, as well as then working out that the lower notes are located on the opposite end of the keyboard.

Using a simple numbering system, we were able to encourage Class 2 S to play some simple tunes as part of this session. Future work will include an introduction to notation, as well as some work on reading sheet music. As you can see from the video above, this was a highly successful first session with some wonderful music being produced by Class 2S.

We are exploring different gymnastic skills as part of our PE sessions in Class 3J. This theme is related to our earlier focus upon different jumping techniques using the school trampoline. The pupils are all now familiar with tuck jumps, star jumps and half-turn jumps after our trampoline sessions. The next stage for this progression was to try these out using different types of Turney School PE equipment.

We started this exercise using a gym bench. A safety mat was placed for the pupils to land upon. We encouraged Class 3J to remember the actions that they used on the trampoline, and then to repeat these moves on the bench. We will progress in future PE sessions with the other gymnastic equipment that we are fortunate to have at Turney School. This includes springboards and vaulting frames. You can watch some examples of our jumping techniques in the video above.

Class 1G enjoyed a really great music session in which we encouraged the pupils to interact with different props. We have been learning some new songs recently – Under the Sea is something of a Class 1G favourite. The song explains all about the many different life forms that can be found under the sea. Using some toys and a series of cloths to represent the sea, Class 1G experienced an added sensory value to their music session. Look out for the sharks!

Class 3J have been combining both their music and ICT sessions. We have been learning how to use a number of musical software packages that help us to compose our own songs. We have asked the pupils to consider a number of musical notations when composing their sequences. We wanted to think about rhythm, pitch and the beat of a song. Each class member came up with a unique song. We then shared these during a group session, and asked our friends for their thoughts on our musical compositions. Class 3J have come up with some highly creative ideas, as you can see from the video above.

Our P.E. sessions at the start of the new school year in Class 3J have been spent learning new techniques on the school trampolines. We wanted the pupils to understand how we can control our movements and carry out instructions such as how to stop. We also built into our routines different counting sequences to help us to keep our focus during the activity. The more experienced pupils added in techniques such as star jumps or tuck jumps. The Turney School trampolines are great resources in helping our pupils learn more about their own body control – they are also plenty of fun! You can find out more in the video above.

Class 11 is continuing to work hard towards our GCSE Art qualification. Part of our current work is based around identity and self-portraits. We have been looking at some of the works of art created by Pablo Picasso, and in particular, what made his form of art so unique. The pupils have studied the use of lines in his abstract drawing, and how these add to some of the self-portraits that Picasso was producing. We have re-created some of his more famous pieces of work, and then experimented ourselves with different types of materials and textures. Some pupils used charcoal; others worked in paint or line drawing.

This exercise will now move on to involve creating some abstract self-portraits by our Class 11 pupils. Using the school cameras, we will take some photographs of ourselves, and then use these as the basis in which to add in more abstract ideas. You can find out more about this process by listening to the podcast below.

All pupils at Turney School have been working incredibly hard ahead of our annual Christmas school production. This year we are proud to present a production of It’s a Party – a traditional tale of the Nativity story with some contemporary songs added in. We are keen to involve all pupils across the school in our annual show. As well as strong input from the Turney School Choir, we have found acting and signing roles for the many other talents across all classes.

Pupils across all year groups have been working incredibly hard with Miss Parker to learn all of the songs. We are now almost ready for Showtime! You can capture a sneak preview of It’s a Party in the various recordings from a recent rehearsal below. Don’t forget that the big day of 13th December, with performances at 2pm and 6pm. All family and friends are welcome!
