Yellow Class have experienced a singing assembly with a difference: we started off our session by singing two songs at the same time, as well as singing in different languages to different people! This sounds much more confusing than it actually is – Yellow Class coped remarkably well with this task and added some variety to our weekly singing sessions. Involving all of the class members is so important during this activity. Some Yellow Class children helped out with the signing, others led the way with some wonderful dancing.

One of the weekly highlights in Yellow Class is always our much anticipated singing assembly! We have been learning how to greet all our friends in Spanish. We started off the assembly with this welcome, and then went on to learn some new songs, as well as to have some renditions of some Yellow Class favourites. Different class members were invited to select their favourite song. All pupils were encouraged to join in, both through singing and signing. As you can hear in the podcast below, the Yellow Class singing assemblies are a great success!

We have been playing many different number games in Yellow Class to help the pupils continue to improve their counting skills. These have included work looking at missing numbers in a sequence, as well as some counting songs. Ten Green Bottles and Five Speckled Frogs are both proving to be Yellow Class favourites!

We have also been using our class circle time to improve our flexibility and increase our physical awareness. Working with the Yellow Class big ball, each pupil took it in turns to explore the resource and bounce up and down under careful supervision. Encouragement was given from class friends with plenty of singing!

Our literacy work in Yellow Class has continued to have a strong focus on phonics. We are all greatly enjoying reading our current class book, Ridiculous.

We have been combining our singing and French language skills in Yellow Class during our weekly singing assembly. The pupils have been learning how to say hello in French, as well as some basic information about ourselves. Singing these together as a class made perfect sense! We also used the opportunity to congratulate the Star of the Class for the week, before getting down to the serious business of learning some new songs for the Turney School Christmas production. Learning the Turney School rules is obviously very important – this doesn’t mean that this exercise can’t be fun though! For our weekly singing assembly, Yellow Class have been singing the school rules in a specially written song.

Plenty words of wisdom are contained within: Don’t run down corridors; don’t throw rubbish on the floor! We are learning, we are learning…

Yellow Class have been staging some very inventive singing classes to start off the second half of the summer term. We have been focusing on our emotions, and trying to understand how different thoughts makes us feel. We started off this work by concentrating on what it means to be happy. We tapped out an upbeat rhythm on our percussion instruments, and then acted out what a happy walk would look like. This was then contrasted with what we think sadness and anger may sound like. This has been a very busy time for all of our pupils in Yellow Class. We all had a wonderful time representing our class at the recent Turney School Kick charity football competition. We have been preparing for this event during our P.E. sessions and practising our basic ball control techniques.

Our main science work for this term is to learn all about magnetic forces. We have had a very practical hands on approach to this learning. The research also includes learning about the different between forces such as a push or a pull.

We are finding out more about our local environment during humanity lessons. Yellow Class are planning a trip to the nearby local library. Ahead of this and we will be looking at maps to find the best possible route, and then coming up with ideas for transport. If this is successful, then we are also thinking about planning a Yellow Class trip to the zoo!

Yellow Class had great fun in their recent food tech lesson. The aim of the session was to plan and prepare an egg mayonnaise sandwich. We started off by asking the pupils to think about what ingredients we might need. Using a Communication in Print menu, we then set out the sequence of events that we would need to follow in order to make our sandwich.

This is a great skill in helping the pupils to develop a sense of independence. We encouraged each class member to make the sandwich on their own, supervising at every stage, but allowing the pupils to work independently. Yellow Class greatly enjoyed their first music session after the half term break. We composed our very own Yellow Class farmyard song! The children started off by listening to recordings of different farm animals. We worked together as a group to name the animals that we could hear. We then added in more animals, and tried to pick out a rhythm. Our song was complete when we handed out the different percussion instruments to the children in Yellow Class. Yellow Class will be learning all about growth during the autumn term at Turney School. We are interested in exploring not only human growth, but also looking at animals and plants. We will be thinking about how we have all changed, as we have grown older, as well as carrying out some practical experiments during science lessons based around plant growth. The theme of growth will also continue during our literacy lessons, with the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears being our main class-reading book. We will be exploring the different themes in the book, and then carrying out our own written work based around the main characters. Plus don’t forget the singing! Yellow Class is a highly talented musical group, as you can hear in the podcast recorded below.

Yellow Class has a successful shopping trip to Brixton Market this week. We have been learning all about how to handle money during our maths lessons. We wanted this to become a practical session, and so the pupils planned a trip to our local market. We researched first which would be the right bus for us to catch. We also talked about what amount of bus fare we would need. Each pupil had planned beforehand what he or she wanted to buy. We tried to think of items of fruit that we particularly like, or perhaps a favourite book or sporting item.

When we arrived at Brixton Market, the serious shopping commenced! All of our pupils were able to find their items, and more importantly, we were able to act independently out in the local community and interact with the traders on the market. Yellow class have been continuing their work looking at what it means to be a refugee, and what kind of emotions or feeling a refugee child might be experiencing. We had a Q & A session with a friend of the school who has been a refugee. Yellow class prepared for this by coming up with some very thoughtful questions, which helped us to understand the theme of going on a journey.

We are planning a trip to Brixton Market next week as part of our PSHE studies. We will be planning the journey on public transport, working out which route we need to take and how much bus fare we will need. We will also be thinking about what items we might like to buy, and where the best place at Brixton Market will be to make our purchase. This is a valuable exercise in not only being confident in being able to handle money, but also to ask for items in a public place and take part in community life.

Yellow class are looking forward greatly to working closely with Gold class for the remainder of the term. With pupils from both classes progressing to the secondary school next year, this is an ideal opportunity to build upon our friendships between the two groups. We are going to introduce the pupils to the topic of refugees. Using a first hand account of what it means to be a refugee, we will be using role-play to explore feelings and emotions. We want to understand more about the lifestyle of a refugee child. This theme also fits in with our wider Yellow class topic of going on a journey, something that our pupils will be doing themselves in September, as they become part of the secondary school!

One of our key focus areas for this term in Yellow Class is to help improve both our handwriting and understanding of phonetics. We have been working our way through the alphabet and sounding out what we can hear in each letter. We then followed some instructions telling us how to write each letter. Each class member then tried to think of a body part that starts with a particular letter. You can watch a video featuring the phonetic work of Yellow class above.
