Year 7 Maths 2D Shapes Research

The Year 7 students at Turney School have started to look at the properties of 2D shapes for their maths learning at the start of the new spring term. The first task has been to be able to identify the names of each shape. Adult help was given to help each class member with their verbal skills.

The pupils were encouraged to count the number of sides that each shape has. This can then help with the correct shape identification. We then matched the words for each shape with a picture. Each pupil was asked to write a complete sentence to describe the shapes:

“A rectangles has four sides.”

Plenty of verbal work was used for this activity. The idea is to help the Year 7 pupils with their speaking skills, as well as to learn about the properties of each shape.
